About the ingredients…
The maca plant, known scientifically as Lepidium meyenii, is sometimes referred to as Peruvian ginseng. It mainly grows in the Andes of central Peru, in harsh conditions and at very high altitudes — above 13,000 feet (4,000 meters). Maca is a cruciferous vegetable and therefore related to broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale. The main edible part of the plant is the root, which grows underground. It can come in several colours, ranging from white to black. The taste of maca root powder has been described as earthy and nutty. Many people add it to their smoothies, oatmeal and sweet treats.
Ginkgo biloba, commonly known as ginkgo or gingko, also known as the ginkgo tree or the maidenhair tree, is the only living species in the division Ginkgophyta, all others being extinct. It is found in fossils dating back 270 million years. Native to China, the tree is widely cultivated, and was cultivated early in human history.
Ginseng is any one of the 11 species of slow-growing perennial plants with fleshy roots, belonging to the genus Panax of the family Araliaceae. Panax ginseng is the botanical cousin of Siberian ginseng. The Panax ginseng used in this food supplement is of the Korean variety.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale), is a rhizome – a thick underground stem that sprouts roots and shoots. This “hot” spice is native to warmer parts of Asia, such as China, Japan, and India, but is now also grown in parts of South American and Africa.
L-arginine is a natural building block called “an amino acid.” It is obtained from the diet and is necessary for the body to make proteins.
Damiana, also known as Turnera diffusa, is a low-growing plant and wild shrub with yellow flowers and fragrant leaves. It is native to the sub-tropical climates of southern Texas, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
Organic black pepper
Black pepper (Piper nigrum) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning. When dried, the fruit is known as a peppercorn. When fresh and fully mature, it is approximately 5 millimetres (0.20 in) in diameter, dark red, and, like all drupes, contains a single seed.
Peppercorns, and the ground pepper derived from them, may be described simply as pepper, or more precisely as black pepper (cooked and dried unripe fruit), green pepper (dried unripe fruit) and white pepper (ripe fruit seeds). Piperine is the alkaloid responsible for the pungency of black pepper.
